Setup guide

This guide walks you through connecting your Notion database to Trope Map and making the most of every feature. Initial setup takes about ten minutes. After that, the widget stays in sync automatically—publish a book in Notion and it appears on next refresh.

Step 1—Create your Notion integration

1

Create a new internal integration

Go to notion.so/my-integrations and click New integration. Name it “Trope Map Widget”, select the workspace your book database lives in, and save. Leave capabilities at their defaults—read access is all the widget needs.

Copy the Internal Integration Token once it's created. Keep it somewhere safe—you'll paste it into the widget editor in Step 4.

Step 2—Set up your Notion database

2

Core properties

Cover URLURLOptional manual override; wins over auto-resolved covers optional
SeriesTextLeave blank for standalones
Series NumberNumberPosition within the series
Trope TagsMulti-selectThe filter taxonomy—one chip renders per option with ≥1 book
Spice LevelSelectOptions 15. Select, not number, so blank means “not yet rated”

Widget OrderNumberManual override for standalone sort order optional

Trope Tags starter list: the taxonomy is fully author-editable—add, remove, or rename options in Notion any time. The widget only ever shows chips for tags with at least one book.

Retailer link properties

Add one URL property for each retailer you sell on—the property name must match exactly:

Amazon
Barnes & Noble
Apple Books
Kobo
Google Play Books
Audible
BookFunnel
Bookshop.org
Payhip
Gumroad
Libro.fm
Books-A-Million
Smashwords
Draft2Digital
Scribd / Everand
Spotify Audiobooks
Chirp
Booktopia
Waterstones
Blackwell's
Author Store
Libby / OverDrive
Hoopla
Downpour
Storytel
Walmart
Target
ThriftBooks

You don't need every retailer. Any property that's blank or missing is simply ignored—the widget never shows an empty button.

Step 3—Connect your integration

3

Share the database with your integration

Open your book database in Notion. Click the ··· menu, then ConnectionsConnect to → select the integration you created in Step 1.

Copy your database ID

Open the database as a full page. The URL looks like notion.so/YOUR-WORKSPACE/abc123def456...?v=...—the database ID is the 32-character string between the last / and ?v=.

Step 4—Configure your widget

4

On your setup page, click New widget. Give it a name, paste your Notion integration token and database ID, choose a theme, and save. Your embed URL and iframe snippet appear on the widget card.

Trope taxonomy overrides optional—a JSON map to rename chip labels without editing Notion, e.g. {"Enemies to Lovers": "Enemies-to-Lovers"}.

Affiliate tags optional—enter your Amazon, Bookshop.org, and Kobo affiliate IDs once; the widget appends them automatically to every matching retailer link.

Step 5—Embed the widget

5

Embed in Notion

  1. Copy the embed URL from your widget card.
  2. In any Notion page, type /embed and select Embed.
  3. Paste the URL and click Embed link.

Embed on a website

Copy the iframe snippet from your widget card and paste it into a WordPress Custom HTML block, a Squarespace Code block, an Elementor HTML widget, or anywhere else that accepts HTML.

Theme

Widgets default to dark. Add &theme=light to the embed URL for a version that blends into any page.

Troubleshooting

The widget shows “No books found”

Make sure at least one row has Widget Visible checked and Status is not Archived.

The widget shows an error instead of books

The most common cause is that your Notion integration hasn't been connected to the database. Open the database → ···ConnectionsConnect to → select your integration.

A retailer button isn't showing

The URL property name in Notion must match exactly, including capitalization and spacing—check against the list in Step 2.
